OFFBEAT

Magazine Design Project
Graphic Design, Content Gatherer

OFFBEAT is a human interest magazine releasing raw stories of black artists and everyday people alike, who break the cultural rhythms behind different artforms. This is a publication for a young, free-spirited, open-minded crowd who is receptive to unique stories in an increasingly polarized world. The content was taken from Huck magazine articles and reformatted to fit my ideas for the brand.

The Problem
Where do black stories live?

Following the death of George Floyd in 2020, massive crowds of people came together in the now infamous BLM movement. Thousands rallied in support of black lives in marches all over the US. That summer, I began this magazine project in light of the chaos in the world. In an increasingly polarized society, it’s more important than ever to share what makes us the same. Deep down, we are all humans and we all belong. Every black individual deserves the same protection of rights as anyone of another race.

Where are the underground artists and young black individuals of the world? Who’s telling their story?

The Solution

Publication sharing raw stories of black individuals challenging mainstream culture.

Inspiration
Through an experimental approach, OFFBEAT breaks visual publication norms similar to the stories shared within. This moodboard features images that speak to rhythm and different types of disruptions within visual elements. I was heavily inspired by graphic shapes and textures created with type.
